IPO volume slumps 58% in 2001

The volume of initial public offerings (IPOs) fell by 58% globally in 2001 as the downturn in equity markets deterred companies from raising money by going public.

IPO volume more than halved to $84.2bn (€95.5bn) from 996 deals compared to $198.4bn from 1,701 deals in 2000, according to Dealogic, the data provider. IPO volume in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) fell 67% to $31.6bn - its lowest level since 1995.
