If the England football team ever gets to a World Cup again – or if England ever gets to host another one after last week’s abject failure to secure the 2018 tournament – it might consider adopting as its official anthem an adaptation of a chant by one middling London-based football team: “Nobody likes us, and we do care”.

Coming last in the bidding for the 2018 tournament - behind the winners Russia and joint bids from Portugal/Spain and Belgium/Netherlands - confirmed what many people in the UK have feared for some time: that most people out there just don't like us. Worse than that, they think we are irrelevant.
