Italy's banks aren't so tasty

The lenders' share prices have risen sharply, but their weaknesses will be in fuller view in the coming year

Italian banks have proven as tasty for investors as the country's ice cream. While European bank stocks have risen by 14% in the past three months, Italy's banks have been on a tear, up 41%.

The sharp rise shows Italian banks as the big winners from growing positive sentiment toward European shares, as memories of the eurozone crisis recede and the US is gripped by political upheaval.
