Straatman’s active returns hinge on talent spotting

Lombard Odier’s chief investment officer favours hedging risk out of the equation, but warns those exposed that an avalanche could be looming

Jan Straatman, chief investment officer at Lombard Odier Investment Managers, is convinced active managers have a bright future, despite the growing popularity of cheap indexation.

He concedes, however, that skill is a scarce commodity, given that managers regularly get blown off course by market volatility, risk factors and error: "I am making a case for active management where you can deal with the underlying risks," he says.
