Jittery markets propel derivatives exchanges to record volume

The big US derivatives exchanges all reached record trading volumes on Tuesday as investors sought to hedge risk against equity markets which saw their sharpest single day fall in four years.

Volume on the Chicago Board of Trade topped 11 million contracts on Tuesday, 44% higher than the previous record set on November 29, 2006. CBOT reached new highs in metals futures and option, treasury futures and options, US treasury notes and bonds futures, and agricultural futures.
