John Mack returns to take charge at Morgan Stanley

Crawford and Cruz resign from the board, Perella and Pandit likely to be invited back

John Mack was appointed chairman and chief executive of Morgan Stanley late last night, immediately replacing Philip Purcell, who resigned following a campaign to oust him by shareholders and former bankers.

The board unanimously elected Mack, who left after losing a power battle with Purcell in 2001. Mack had been with the bank 29 years.
