Kuwait comes to the fore as US banks raise new money

The Kuwaiti government, which has never previously invested in the western banking sector, today became one of the world’s largest financial sector investors after spending billions buying stakes in Citigroup and Merrill Lynch.

Kuwait Investment Authority this morning emerged as one of the main investors in two multi-billion capital injections in Citigroup and Merrill Lynch, which together raised $19.1bn (€12.9bn).
