At the end of the First World War, John Maynard Keynes studied the talks among the great powers and concluded: “When the final result is expected to be a compromise, it is often prudent to start from an extreme position.”

This advice is being ignored by Liam Fox and the other Brexiteers in the cabinet - and it is already hurting the City.
