City lawyers are quietly warning trade body UK Finance that, if it does not tap their expertise, the underresourced UK government departments and regulators in charge of scrutinising a vast piece of incoming legislation designed to convert all European Union rules to UK law could be heading for disaster.

The EU Withdrawal Bill, the government’s flagship piece of Brexit legislation, aims to copy 12,000 EU rules and 7,900 statutory instruments onto the domestic statute book.
