When Andy Kuper first had the idea more than 15 years ago to create a business focused on delivering services to low-income consumers in the developing world, impact investing was virtually unheard of.

It was while he was working on a project in India that the South Africa-born entrepreneur noticed that a large number of businesses existed that were serving low-income populations but were “superior” to those aimed at middle- and upper-income customers.
