Europe’s top financial regulator has clashed with one of the City of London’s oldest exchanges over a quaint method of trading employed in the metals markets.

The London Metal Exchange, which still allows trades to take place via telephone, has asked the banks and trading firms that make up its membership for their advice on what to do next.
