M&A activity slumps by a third

The value of completed mergers and acquisitions in Europe slumped 35% last month, despite analyst predictions of a continuing M&A boom this year.

The total value of European transactions fell from €58bn ($75bn)-worth of deals in January 2006, to €38bn last month, according to Zephyr, the M&A data provider.
