Companies adjust to a fall in equity research spending by City institutions and a dearth of UK corporate deals

Macquarie, the Australian investment banking group, is in talks to buy Liberum, the City broker, for up to £100m as new trading rules drive consolidation in the European equity research market.

According to one person close to the Australian bank, Macquarie wants to strengthen its London-based equities business, which has been hit by regulations that have forced investors to pay directly for research.
