Malaysia authorises short-selling after nine-year ban

The Malaysian stock exchange has reintroduced rules allowing hedge funds to engage in short-selling nearly a decade after the country's government blamed alternative asset managers for the Asian financial crisis.

Bursa Malaysia said it had reauthorised rules on securities borrowing and short-selling with effect from yesterday. This will allow hedge funds to borrow share certificates and sell them on the open market in the hope of buying them back after a fall in price.
