Market falls cause UK pension funds to shed 6% in first quarter

The value UK pension funds' portfolios fell by 6% in the first quarter of 2001 after UK equities, which account for almost half of their assets, dropped by more than 8%, according to performance measurer WM.

Over the 12 months to March 31 the funds saw their assets fall in value by 7%, with the main factor being the plunge in technology and telecommunications stocks after March 2000.
