The former Goldman Sachs partner hired by HSBC to help change the face of its investment banking business is leaving after less than two years amid suggestions of tensions among senior staff.

The departure of Matthew Westerman was confirmed in a memo today by Samir Assaf, the chief executive of HSBC's global banking and markets business.
