One of the most successful teams in Formula One motor racing is gearing up to challenge sports-car makers with its own high-performance vehicles for the road in a move it hopes will secure its long-term future.

McLaren Group, which encompasses the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula One racing team, on Thursday formally launched McLaren Automotive and unveiled its first model that it plans to start selling in spring 2011 through a dedicated global retail network.
