Merrill and Deutsche wade into $8bn Gold Fields battle

Harmony, the South African gold producer whose bid for larger rival Gold Fields was rejected yesterday, has added Merrill Lynch to its stable of advisers. Harmony's offer gatecrashed existing talks between Gold Fields and Iamgold of Canada.

Bernard Swanepoel, Harmony's chief executive, said Merril would fortify Harmony's efforts to make its case to Gold Field's shareholders.
