Merrill Lynch HSBC hires chief executive

Merrill Lynch HSBC, the retail investment and banking joint venture, has appointed Margaret Barrett as its chief executive.

Barrett, an American, will join the company on 1 January 2001 and will be based in London, the global headquarters. She is currently executive vice-president of consumer lending at the Bank of Montreal, having previously developed direct-to-consumer financial services products with GE Capital.
