Royal & SunAlliance, the UK insurer has appointed Merrill Lynch as its strategic financial adviser and joint broker with Cazenove. It is the US bank's first new FTSE 100 client since rebuilding its corporate broking team following six defections two months ago.

Paul Baker, Merrill Lynch's former co-head of corporate broking, left with six others to set up a rival operation at Morgan Stanley in April.
