Merrill Lynch Investment Managers is understood to have used advice from Watson Wyatt to put together its multi-manager Diamond Portfolio Management service.

Neither MLIM nor Watson Wyatt would comment on the contract. But MLIM's Andrew Dyson, who chairs the Diamond selection committee, confirmed that a top consultant had provided a shortlist of external managers suitable for selection.
