Thomas Patrick has been promoted to vice-chairman of Merrill Lynch with a broadened remit, while Ahmass Fakahany is to succeed him as the bank's chief financial officer.

Stan O'Neal, Merrill's president, has made the changes to his senior management team just ahead of taking over from David Komansky as chief executive on December 2.
