Moody’s downgrades Europe’s banks as outlook darkens

The outlooks for the Belgian, Danish, Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish banking systems are now negative

Moody’s has downgraded its outlooks for the Belgian, Danish, Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish banking systems from stable to negative, as Europe heads towards a probable recession triggered by the region’s Covid-19 lockdown.

The decision, announced on 26 March, places these six European countries in the same outlook category as Germany and the UK and means that eight of Europe’s 10 largest financial systems now have negative outlooks.
