Morgan Stanley has promoted its outspoken chief economist, known for his view that China "has no choice" but to cool its overheating economy, to the position of Asia chairman.

Stephen Roach, who is currently based in London, will assume the new role in June and relocate to Hong Kong in September. He will replace Alasdair Morrison who has retired, according to a statement released by the US bank last week.
