Morgan Stanley targets $6bn for private equity

US investment bank has Goldman Sachs' fund in its sights

Morgan Stanley is planning to raise at least $6bn (€4.6bn) for a new private equity fund as it tries to catch up with Goldman Sachs' buyout business.

The venture will be Morgan Stanley's first big fund since it spun off its private equity business three years ago and chief executive John Mack put alternative assets at the centre of his growth strategy for the US bank.
