Most UK defined benefit fund closures occurred since 2000

Close to three quarters of all defined benefit pension fund closures in the UK have occured in the last two years, according the Labour Research Department and GMB, Britain's General Union.

In total there have been over 80 DB, or final salary scheme, closures in the UK since 1995, according to GMB. The two first to close were Ferro GB, an automotive firm and WH Smith, the UK retailer, in 1995.
