Pensioners involved in the six-year battle against UK electricity companies' use of £1.8bn (€2.9bn) of surplus pension fund assets plan to take their case to Europe having been dealt a blow by the House of Lords.

National Grid and National Power pensioners were told by the House of Lords on Wednesday that after matching liabilities of the pension fund, the sponsoring companies were entitled to use any surplus assets at their discretion.
