Two geographically diverse alliances of councils have emerged as surprise leaders from UK government plans to merge £215 billions' worth of town hall pension funds into six regional 'British Wealth Funds'.

The so-called Border-to-Coast Pensions Partnership, an alliance of funds stretching from Northumberland to Surrey, is leading the pack in terms of membership, with 11 councils signed up.
