Merrill Lynch has moved to strengthen its presence in the Iberian peninsula with the appointment of Jaime Bergel as country chairman for Spain and Portugal.

Bergel is taking over the role currently occupied by Claudio Aguirre, who will remain chairman of Merrill's international private banking group for Europe. Bergel will be based in London.
