A severe lack of competition has been exposed among the powerful advisers to the UK’s £1.6tn pension industry, prompting fresh calls for the country’s Competition and Markets Authority to come down hard on the sector.

According to new data spanning the last 10 years, competition among investment consultants — who wield enormous influence over the UK pension market — has collapsed, refocusing fears of inherent conflicts of interest and barriers to entry within the industry.
