Online brokers fight for market share in low-margin landscape

With technology indices showing huge losses, many companies which found entry into e-brokerage too easy are counting the cost and face consolidation

A year ago, financial firms flocked to set up online brokerages in Europe, attracted by booming stock markets and European investors' new-found appetite for equities, particularly technology stocks and initial public offerings (IPOs).

Online share-dealing services were often indistinguishable, the technology sometimes shaky and operating margins slim, but in a booming market, it hardly seemed to matter.
