Chief executives at large quoted US corporates each secured average payouts of $20m (€22m) last year by cashing in share option tranches, according to proxy advisory service IRRC.

The total compares with an average of $11m the previous year, says IRRC director Carol Bowie. Total executive compensation, including initial options grants, also rose last year to an average of $12.9m .
