Pearl Group, the privately-held UK life assurer run by entrepreneur Hugh Osmond, has bought a fresh tranche of shares in rival Resolution Life this morning as part of its efforts to undermine Resolution's agreed merger with Friends Provident.

Sources familiar with the situtation said Pearl now owns about 14% of Resolution.
