The Philippine government is planning to remove the documentary stamp tax (DST) on securities borrowing and lending. Under current rules, such transactions are treated as loans and each transfer attracts DST.
The current tax is understood to be 0.15% for every 200 Philippine pesos worth of shares borrowed. This gives the government $92,000 per annum. But revenues generated if securities lending became a mainstream activity could reach $3.4m.
