Netherlands electronics group Philips, one of the biggest companies listed on Euronext, has thrown its weight behind a merger of the European exchange and Deutsche Börse.

Gerard Kleisterlee, chief executive of Philips, said at a conference in Brussels yesterday that the merger would be a "good step" towards creating a more integrated financial market in the European Union.
