Pitt resigns as SEC chief

Harvey Pitt has succumbed to political pressure and resigned as chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Pitt made the decision to step down on Tuesday. He has been under intense pressure to resign following a row over his backing of William Webster to chair the new US accounting board.
