The British pound surged after a court ruled that the UK government needs parliamentary approval to trigger the process of Britain’s exit from the European Union.
The High Court ruled that Prime Minister Theresa May couldn't trigger Article 50-the formal mechanism of the Lisbon Treaty which begins the exit process for an EU member--without a parliamentary vote. Lawmakers in parliament largely supported the Remain camp in the June 23 Brexit referendum, and a greater influence over the process could cause the triggering of Article 50 to be delayed or for the government to have to mold a so-called soft Brexit.
