Private equity funds' assets swelled to their largest-ever size during 2016, according to new figures, amassing a record $2.49 trillion.

The figures, published on January 31 by data provider Preqin, show investors are pouring money into private equity faster than it can be spent, with uninvested capital, also known as "dry powder", also at record levels.
