Buyout firms are posting cheques to their investors for nearly €40 billion – and hope to get much of it back

Big returns from private equity boost fundraising hopes

Europe's largest private equity firms are returning around €40 billion to their investors from sales made in the first three quarters and will be hoping to get much of it back as they hit the fundraising trail.

Exits have boomed in Europe this year. Among the largest was the €3.9 billion sale of German motorway service station chain Tank & Rast by Terra Firma and Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management. Terra Firma's cash return was 7.5 times.
