Turkey was billed as the next big thing in private equity after the financial crisis, with buyout firms queuing up to open offices and court local businesses.

Firms were lured by the prospect of high growth, an expanding population and close links to Europe. But that bullishness did not pay off. Over the past two years the country's buyout market has come off the boil, with a lack of dealflow and several international firms shutting up shop.
