Privatisation struggles to make the real agenda

The stifling spirit of the British Raj still stalks the corridors of power despite the oft-repeated talk of selling off public-sector enterprises

So what if India is riding the global technology wave? Its public-sector enterprises (PSEs) still walk and talk at the pace of the British Raj.

Little attention to quality, piecemeal efforts at modernisation and chronic over-staffing, backed by politicised unions, have made the PSEs into motionless Godzillas. Add to that a dirty word called 'privatisation' and it is a recipe for disaster.
