NatWest's survival was in doubt yesterday following mounting speculation that the Royal Bank of Scotland could be victorious, reports The Guardian.

A theory began to emerge that big shareholders in NatWest who also hold shares in the two Scottish assailants might end backing the Royal Bank's bid because they would prefer Bank of Scotland to remain independent.
