ENI, the Italian oil and gas group, is in alliance talks with Spain's Repsol-YPF that could lead to a merger, reports the Financial Times.

The merged company would become one of Europe's largest energy groups. People close to both groups said ENI, part owned by the government, and the Spanish company were working intensively to reach a merger agreement.
