John von Spreckelsen and David Hamid have become the latest senior executives from the retail industry to join the private equity business. They will become operating partners of Merchant Equity Partners, a retail-focused buy-out firm launched last month, originally under the name Mercapita.

Von Spreckelsen is a former executive chairman of Somerfield, a UK food retailer, and ex-chief executive of Budgens, a rival.
