Sainsbury confirms bid defence talks with Morgan Stanley

FSA 'selective briefing' probe continues

Sainsbury, the troubled UK supermarket group, confirmed today that it has held talks with Morgan Stanley over preparing defences against a potential hostile takeover.

Justin King, Sainsbury chief executive, said that despite the talks with Morgan Stanley, which won plaudits for its work defending rival retailer Marks & Spencer, he had not formally hired the investment bank as an adviser.
