Santander has dropped its appointment of Andrea Orcel as the Spanish bank's new chief executive, with the company citing problems over the 55-year-old's pay packet.

The unprecedented move comes just months after Europe’s second-largest bank announced the recruitment of the Italian-born banker from rival UBS, where he headed the investment bank.
