Santander grows on investment banking

Santander, the Spanish bank in the RBS-led triumvirate battling for ABN Amro, increased profits in its wholesale banking division by more than two-thirds to €795m ($1.1bn) in the first quarter of the year, driven by growth in its investment banking business.

Profits from investment banking, which includes corporate finance, structured finance and asset and capital structuring, increased nearly 300% to €215m.
