Santander offered Andrea Orcel a boutique bank after yanking CEO role

Spanish bank hoped move would compensate former UBS banker for missing out on top job

Santander offered to help Andrea Orcel set up his own company after surprising markets by withdrawing an offer to make him chief executive, it has emerged.

The former UBS investment banker was appointed to replace Antonio Alvarez as chief executive in September, but the offer was rescinded in January over what the Spanish bank said were concerns regarding his pay package.
