Robin Saunders, the head of principal finance at WestLB, is in negotiations with the German bank that could lead to her gaining greater independence and bringing outside investors into her operation.

The discussions are at an early stage, but could see Saunders following a similar route to Guy Hands, the former head of principal finance at Nomura, who last year set up his own firm, Terra Firma, with the full support of Nomura.
