Scientists call for ‘urgent action’ on Covid-19 spread in schools before Christmas

Infection rates are now higher among secondary school pupils than any other age group, scientists warned

A group of prominent scientists called for the government to take “urgent action” on high infection rates in schools, ahead of relaxed rules at Christmas that might see children spread the infection on to elderly relatives.

Infection rates among secondary school pupils are now higher than any other age group in the UK, said Independent SAGE, which provides independent advice to the government on the Covid-19 crisis and is chaired by former chief scientific adviser Sir David King.
